Daren Sammy understood how difficult it would be to fly to India, where the West Indies haven’t won a bilateral ODI series in about 20 years. He continued by talking about the team’s successes and their capacity to use local talent.

How have the West Indies batted in this series?

The West Indies have had some outstanding batting efforts despite India’s comfortable wins in the first two ODIs. On September 27, 2026, in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram, the West Indies scored 295, but India chased the target in 42 overs. In the second ODI in Guwahati on September 30, 2026, West Indies significantly boosted their score to 405 for 7, but India once more exceeded the target, this time in 44 overs. In both games, West Indies hitters scored four hundreds, which Sammy described as encouraging.

Daren Sammy observed that the intention of his top order was positive, noting:

However, Daren Sammy acknowledged that the West Indies in Guwahati, especially in the last ten overs of their innings, left runs on the table. He also commended Indian openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma for winning the match early in the powerplay.

How does the visiting team feel about the wage cut in Cricket West Indies?

Just before the India tour began, Cricket West Indies announced a 25% reduction in player retainer fees in an attempt to address ongoing financial issues. Daren Sammy acknowledged that the timing wasn’t ideal, but he maintained that he understood the rationale. Sammy thought about the organization’s financial difficulties.

Since taking over as captain in May 2023, Daren Sammy has won four of the seven home ODI series. In contrast, the West Indies won just four of the thirty bilateral ODI series played between October 2014 and April 2023. When the West Indies play their third ODI in New Chandigarh on October 3, 2026, they will have an opportunity to avoid a tour whitewash.
