Despite his early success, veteran all-rounder Kapil Dev has expressed concern about the teenager’s future chances. Kapil Dev stated that, while Sooryavanshi has significant potential, history demonstrates that talent alone does not guarantee a long-term career at the top level. The captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team used a clear parallel to make his case.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has made a great start to his international career at the age of 15. The teenage batter won the IPL Orange Cap in 2026 after hitting 776 runs over 16 innings, and in the Under-19 World Cup final, he hit an unbeaten 175 off 80 balls, including 15 fours and 15 sixes. He made his international debut for India in the T20I series against England in July 2026 and has since become as one of Indian cricket’s most promising young players.
Why did Kapil Dev reference Vinod Kambli’s example
Kapil Dev highlighted that time and personal development would be more useful indicators than instant performance metrics. The former all-rounder emphasised the importance of age and lifestyle choices in shaping a player’s international career path.
His statements emphasised that early success in domestic tournaments and youth events does not guarantee long-term success in international cricket.

Sooryavanshi is still awaiting his shot in the T20I team, trailing the regular opening tandem of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. It will be intriguing to watch if Sooryavanshi plays the second T20I against the West Indies on Friday, October 9.
