He hit Steve Smith on the head with a bouncer during Australia’s second innings on the fourth day of the first Test match against South Africa in Durban. The fifth ball of the thirteenth over from Nortje hit Smith in the head and went straight for fine leg, which led to the incident. The short-pitched ball didn’t bounce as high as Smith thought it would, so he dove to avoid it. The team doctor and physiotherapist checked out the 37-year-old batter on the field, and his helmet was changed before he could bat again.

Simon Harmer caught Steve Smith at long-on after he had scored 27 runs off of 41 balls. Australia won the game by 214 runs thanks to his continued play after getting hit in the helmet. But the event also had very bad effects on Smith’s mental health, which he went on to talk about in great detail.

The incident in Durban caused worry that went beyond the blow itself. Because he wasn’t sure if he would have concussion effects overnight, it put extra stress on his mind.

Steve Smith talked about how his mood affected the rest of the day that followed.

Steve Smith’s spot in the cordon was taken by Michael Neser, a replacement fielder, when South Africa began their second innings. On the fifth day of the first Test, however, he went back out on the field after doctors checked him out and said he didn’t have a concussion. By making a catch to get rid of Kyle Verreynne when he came back to the field, he showed that he was ready to keep helping the team.
