Scotland might no longer be alive in the race for a semi-final spot in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 but they still have an important match on their hands, that being concerning this final group-stage fixture against Nepal. Although their hopes of progressing in the tournament have ended, this match may be pivotal in determining their road to the 2028 T20 World Cup.

Despite traveling to Mozambique with high hopes a return to the Super Eight looked unrealistic in a group that went down to the wire. Having lost three of their first four qualifiers, including one at home to England, they were effectively out of contention for a qualifying berth from the group. The team has something to play for in the remaining match despite having a disappointing time.

The qualification process for the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, has already been set out by the International Cricket Council. Automatic qualification is given to the hosts and to the teams that reach the Super Eight stage of this World Cup with twenty teams in total competing at the event. Other spots will be determined through ICC rankings and regional qualification pathways.

Scotland could possibly be a panting block holding on to avoid their bid in ICC Men’s T20I positions. A dominating outing by them against Nepal will not only ensure they end their campaign on a high note but also fortify their rankings points ahead of the next qualification window for future qualifications. Hence, the upcoming contest is not just another dead-rubber match.

Scotland has been one of the considered strongest Associate nations, as far as cricket is concerned over the last 10 years or more. The side has featured regularly in iconic ICC tournaments which have helped to enhance the profile of the team, whilst obtaining an easier pathway towards qualification for the 2028 World Cup remains a continued focus.

As a result, players and coaching staff are expected to take the Nepal game as seriously as they can even though they have been eliminated from the tournament. A win here would undoubtedly give Scotland momentum, protection of ranking points and also crucially leave them ideally placed to start preparing for the next cycle of competition in international football. The dream of hoisting the trophy is no more but with Scotland eyeing qualification for cricket’s biggest T20 stage once again, it’s win or bust.
