India became the first team in cricket history to record 200 wins in T20 Internationals, including Super Over victories, on September 22, 2026, when they defeated Japan by two runs in a rain-shortened five-over match at Sano International Cricket Ground.

As part of the Suzuki Cup 2026, it was also Japan and India’s first senior men’s Twenty20 International match. Shreyas Iyer, the captain of India, decided to bat first after winning the toss. Japan’s chase concluded with 30 for 3, while India finished with 32 for 4 in their five overs. India won a Twenty20 International by exactly two runs for the fourth time.

How did India’s overall T20I win total rise over time?

Ind journey to 200 T20I triumphs began with their first victory in the format, a six-wicket victory over South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006. The trajectory of each successive landmark tells a story of growing dependability and accelerating success.

For their 50th Twenty20 International victory, Ind defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in Colombo in 2017. It took 83 games to accomplish this record. The 100th victory, which came against the West Indies by eight runs in Kolkata in 2022, was achieved in 72 further games after the 50th. India’s 150th victory came in Gros Islet in 2024 when they defeated Australia by 24 runs; 70 more games were required after the 100th.

Interestingly, it was the fastest of them, taking only 66 games to go from win number 151 to 200. As evidenced by the fact that each block of 50 victories has taken fewer games than the previous one, Ind has become increasingly skilled at converting opportunities into victory under all conditions and against all opposition levels.

Milestone Opponent Venue Year Result
1st win South Africa Johannesburg 2006 Won by 6 wickets
50th win Sri Lanka Colombo RPS 2017 Won by 7 wickets
100th win West Indies Kolkata 2022 Won by 8 runs
150th win Australia Gros Islet 2024 Won by 24 runs
200th win Japan Sano 2026 Won by 2 runs

Why did Japan and India’s Twenty20 International stand out?

Ind had to work hard to win, despite the fact that it was a historic occasion. The match at Sano International Cricket Ground was restricted to five overs each side due to the rain, and India’s score of 32 for 4 was reasonable considering the circumstances. A low target always puts pressure on the batting side in a five-over match, therefore India’s bowlers had to be disciplined to guard it.

Japan made a valiant effort under Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming’s leadership, reaching 30 for 3 before losing by two runs. The close game showed that Japan was competitive in the shortened format despite being a developing nation in cricket. The fact that Ind had to remain composed until the very last delivery because of the two-run disadvantage made the historic 200th victory all the more amazing.
