The IPL 2026 playoff race has been rocked by another costly defeat for Punjab Kings, which sees the qualification battle completely wide open with just a few league matches left. A few weeks back it could have been said that the PBKS side set one of the strong challengers for a top four spot but after some poor outings lately, they have slipped and allowed at least half-a-dozen teams with renewed hope of making it to the top four.

The side’s latest loss to Delhi Capitals has piled more pressure on Punjab Kings after they were unable to defend a competitive score. It was the fourth loss in a row for the team and doubts have begun to emerge about their bowling force or whether they can find some middle-order consistency. After the game, the side’s captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that they will have to make amends soon if they do not want to lose momentum at such a critical juncture in the tournament.
But PBKS are still very much in it mainly due to a positive net run rate as well as points gained from earlier results this season. But the margin for error is tiny now. A further loss could sap their confidence entirely and leave a number of sides right in direct competition with them for those final playoff places.
The position of Royal Challengers Bengaluru seems to be strongest among all teams. After winning its last match against Mumbai Indians, they sit comfortably at the top of the points table, earning wins in much easier fashion than many expected, allowing them to possibly qualify early on. Meanwhile, both Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have hit their peak at the right time and now look well-placed to finish in top two.
Punjab Kings fell apart like a cheap camera and in the process, have provided Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals with a big chance. With each side now believing they could crash back into the top four, however, big finishes in their final matches means both teams are still mathematically alive. Delhi Capitals (DC) are also in the hunt after beating Punjab Kings, but they will need some results to go their way in other matches to qualify.
In contrast, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow super giants are both out of the race for playoffs after an abysmal season. Both were up and down through the season and neither team could forge the kind of winning run they needed at critical junctures.
The second half of the IPL 2026 season is live and heading toward an exciting finish as the league stage nearing its end. Multiple teams separated by only a few have left us so tightly positioned, with net run rate potentially deciding the final qualification spots. What is left is now of utmost importance with every match being a factor in the playoffs race that looks set to run until the closing days.
